Home of Dickens & Hunter Stories
I am originally from Nova Scotia and I have always liked animals, all animals! Growing up we usually had a cat in the house. After buying our first house in Dartmouth, I brought a kitten home. On occasion I traveled to Yarmouth for work. During one of my stays I was presented with this sweet, little ginger tabby kitten and told I could bring him home if I wished. I did and we named him Hobbes. He was a great cat … elegant and regal were descriptors often used by friends. And so it all began!
So, here we are many years later. Cats have come and gone, and we now have taken in two feral cats. Dickens arrived first and then three years ago, along came Hunter. I fed Hunter outside for six months before he came into the house and once he came in, he promptly hid under the bed for five months. At times I would find myself talking about the resident cat, Dickens, and his friend who lives under the bed. Then I thought, this sounds like a good title for a children's book, so I wrote one! It is called, Dickens And The Cat Who Lived Under The Bed.
Bringing feral cats into a house is quite the experience for all. The cats do not know anything about being inside or their surroundings. It is an exercise in patience and trust to build the relationships needed for all to move forward. Cats, like all animals are intelligent, form bonds, and communicate with each other, and us when we pay attention and learn their ‘language’. I have found that as I continue to interact with these lovely animals, I learn not just about them, but about myself as well. My experiences have been both pleasant and enriching.
I hope my Dickens and Hunter story reminds us that all living things deserve to be cared for and treated with kindness.
I hope that this little story will be enjoyed and perhaps be a teaching tool, a door that could lead to conversations about things that happen that we may not know how to approach with little ones.
I hope that kindness counts!
